ALISO VIEJO — Kaustick capped their first ice season by capturing the inaugural H-101 championship at the Aliso Viejo Ice Palace on Saturday, June 6, 2009.
The championship came with a 2-0 victory over the Red Wings in the finals (box score). Two days earlier, Kaustick advanced with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Ducks (box score).
Goaltender Julian Sarrategui was spectacular in both games, posting a 0.50 GAA for the playoffs and making stops on all 23 shots he faced in the final.
Defenseman Marc Posner opened the scoring against the Wings, holding in a loose puck at the blueline and sailing a weak wrist shot through traffic late in the first period.
Rich Griffin provided insurance, adding a goal from Boris Gutman near the game’s midway point.
Kaustick moved into the finals having battled back two nights earlier against the Ducks. Down 1-0, Eddie Garcia carried the puck from his own end and put a wrist shot in from the left circle to tie the game (watch Garcia’s goal).
Gutman put the game winner in the second period on a beautiful play. Garcia held the puck in at the left point. The rebound of his blocked shot went to Griffin, who passed it to Lisa Lindsey. Linsey slid a strike to Gutman, who beat the goalie half-way up on the stick side (watch Gutman’s goal).
